Annual Meeting of the Indian Biophysical Society

Centre of Advanced Study in Crystallography and Biophysics
 University of Madras

January 19 - 21, 2012

The foundations of Molecular Biophysics in India were laid by late Professor G. N. Ramachandran, F. R. S. when he founded the well known Madras School of Biophysics at the Department of Crystallography and Biophysics, University of Madras in 1952. We are pleased to inform you that 2012 happens to be the 60th year of the formation of the department and also the 100th year of Laue's discovery; we would like to celebrate this occasion in a grand manner. We are announcing herewith the Annual Meeting of the Indian Biophysical Society (IBS-2012) that is being organized by the department during January 19th - 21st 2012 for the occasion and we solicit your cooperation and support as extended during the previous meeting.

Professor Ratna Phadke Award For Young Scientists
The Award was established in 2006 to commemorate the memory of Prof. Ratna Phadke, a distinguished scientist in the field of Molecular Biophysics, out of an endowment of Rs.50,000/- made by her husband, Dr. Suresh Phadke and friends. The title of the award is Professor Ratna Phadke Award”.
Prof. Ratna Phadke Award will be given to a young scientist below 35 years, every year as on December 31, during the Indian Biophysical Society Annual Symposium.  The Award carries a cash prize of Rs.3000/-.
The nominations for the award may be forwarded by the Supervisor with an abstract of the presentation and bio-data of the nominee (for Research Fellows or PDF/RA/Pool Officer) or by the Head of the Department (if the nominee is a faculty member but below 35 years of age) to the Convenor of the Symposium.
The candidate, who is selected for the award will be asked to deliver an oral presentation during the Symposium.  For this purpose, the selected candidate will be informed at least 15 days prior to the Symposium.
Best Poster Awards
There are five best poster awards as mentioned below. These are given to young scientists below 35 years based on their poster presentation during the IBS Annual Symposium.
1. D.M. Bose Award
2. N.N. Dasgupta Award
3. N.N. Saha Award
4. A.R. Gopala Ayengar Award
5. K.S. Korgaonkar Award
Posters must include introduction, aims & objectives, methods, observations, results, discussion & conclusions. Please prepare your poster according to the size of the poster board. The size of the poster board is 1.0 m (height) x 0.9 m (width). Presenting authors will be informed about the acceptance of their abstracts for the poster session by the 3rd week of December, 2011. Poster seesions are scheduled for two days: January 19-20, 2012 and between 12.45 hrs to 15.45 hrs. All ODD numbered posters as per the abstract book will be presented in the first day. All EVEN numbered posters are scheduled for the second day, January 20, 2012. All posters have to be in-place by 12.00 noon on January 19, 2012. We have made provision that all posters be available for viewing for the first two days. However the presenters are requested to be near their poster during their time of presentation.
G N Ramachandran Lecture:
We are pleased to announce that Prof. GNR Memorial lecture will be delivered by Prof. Christopher M. Dobson, F.R.S, from the Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge, Lensfield Road, Cambridge.
Prof. Christopher M. Dobson is a John Humphrey Plummer Professor of Chemical and Structural Biology. Chris Dobson was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1996 and of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2005. In 2007, he was elected to Honorary Foreign Membership of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has received many awards during his career including the Stein and Moore (2003) and the Hans Neurath (2006) Awards of the Protein Society, and the Davy Medal of the Royal Society (2005). He has also been awarded four Honorary Degrees in Science and Medicine. In 2009, he was awarded the Royal Medal by the Royal Society "for his outstanding contributions to the understanding of the mechanisms of protein folding and mis-folding, and the implications for disease."
